The Staff Acupuncturist will work under the auspices of the Comprehensive Pain Service and is responsible for evaluation for and administration of acupuncture therapy for pediatric and select adult patients. Care will be provided in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Acupuncturists will have to demonstrate competence in working with children birth to 21 years of age in a family centered, pediatric, integrated medicine setting, and in infection control practices. In addition, the staff acupuncturist will be expected to participate in research and education efforts of the Comprehensive Pain Service.

Responsibilities

  1. Completes assessment of pain history and develops plan for acupuncture therapy in collaboration with Chief of Pain Service.
  2. Applies principles of growth and development and applies age specific competencies in working with the various age patients.
  3. Documents treatment plan and response in medical record.
  4. Educates patient/family on procedure, risks and benefits of acupuncture.
  5. Participates in care conferences with Pain Team to evaluate alternative care when goals of acupuncture are deemed ineffective.
  6. Provides education to other health care team members on the use of acupuncture.
  7. Applies family centered care principles in all interactions with patients and families.
  8. Adheres to customer service principles as defined by Nationwide Children's Hospital to both internal and external customers.
  9. Protects confidentiality of patients.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  1. Certification by the National board of Acupuncture or Oriental Medicine
  2. Licensure by the Ohio Medical Board
  3. Experience with pediatric acupuncture preferred
  4. Evidence of at least one year of practice or education in an integrated medicine environment
  5. Must have own malpractice insurance

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be able to see, hear, speak, read and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation, and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.

The Fargo VA Health Care System (VA HCS) is a Level 2 Medical Center and a member of Veterans Integrated Service Network 23. This facility is currently operating 77 beds, A 24 bed medical surgery Unit, a 10 bed Mental Health unit, a 5 bed Intensive Care Unit and a 38 bed Community Living Center which provides transitional care, accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Due to the growing veteran population, ten Community Based Outpatient Clinics have been established. The Fargo VA HCS provides a wide spectrum of primary, tertiary acute and extended care inpatient and outpatient activities in an academic setting. The acupuncturist is responsible for being self-directed in the delivery of patient care. The acupuncturist is responsible for coordinating providers delivering battlefield acupuncture and assisting in training of new providers delivering battlefield acupuncture.

The acupuncturist may treat a wide range of conditions and acupuncture may be used alone or as an adjunct to traditional medical care. The acupuncturist includes the stimulation of specific points along the skin of the body using thin needles with or without the addition of electric stimulation. The acupuncturist may use various techniques commonly taught in East Asian Medicine or Acupuncture schools. The acupuncturist may also instruct medical students and/or residents/fellows during normal tour of duty.

Duties

The incumbent serves as the Acupuncturist in Whole Health in the Associate Director for Patient Care Services at the Fargo VA Medical Center.

The practice of Acupuncture is the practice of medicine based upon traditional oriental medical theories.

Duties include:

  • The insertion of metal needles through the skin at certain points on the body, with or without the use of herbs, with or without the application of electric current, and with or without the application of heat to the needles, skin, or both, in an attempt to relieve pain or improve bodily function.
  • Electro acupuncture, whether utilizing electrodes on the surface of the skin or current applied to inserted needles, and laser acupuncture are considered the practice of acupuncture.
  • The incumbent will independently access, develop treatment plans and perform acupuncture to Veteran patients in a clinical setting;

Perform quality acupuncture treatments and Oriental Medicine procedures on patients following prescribed techniques and protocols. Maintain and follow standard quality, safety and infection control policies and procedures. Collect medical histories and general health information from patients. Formulate, recommend and clearly communicate a treatment plan for each patient, including proper point location and needle positions, needle depth and contraindications. Consider Western medical procedures in health assessment, health care team communication, and referrals. Maintain detailed and complete records of health care plans, treatments and prognosis, and utilize EMR for all patient records. Monitor patient health progress for constant assessment of techniques and procedures needed for their optimal health. Refer to other CIHN modalities, providers and classes when appropriate. Develop relationships with targeted providers and provider groups at University Hospitals to develop their understanding, acceptance and utilization of acupuncture through communication with referring providers and outreach to providers within select specialties.

Current certification with the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Current license in the State of Ohio with the State Medical Board of Ohio strongly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Understand the Serasana model of health and wellness, and work together with fellow team members to help our clients take full advantage of available offerings. 
  • Meet with clients to obtain information about their concerns, symptoms, medical history, diet, lifestyle, and overall wellness. 
  • Make diagnoses, according to Chinese Medicine and determine session strategies.

We are seeking a dynamic Part-Time Faculty Member to join our academic team and teach two sections of Anatomy & Physiology, beginning Fall term, 2018.

Position Summary

  • Anatomy & Physiology I, II, III is taught each year in fall, winter, and spring quarters to first year students in the Master’s program. The class is 2.5 credits each term, meeting for 2.5 hours per week in two sections of 25 students each. For the 2018-2019 academic year, the course is scheduled on Fridays.
  • Course content is about 80% physiology, with anatomy incorporated as needed for context. There is no lab component. Students complete a separate 3-term surface anatomy class (Living Anatomy I-III), taught in the same time frame, for thorough coverage of human anatomy.
  • This position reports to the Chair of Integrative Medicine and the Dean of Master’s Studies.
  • Pay for this position is $45.90-$50 per instructional hour (60 instructional hours per quarter), and depends on academic background and teaching experience. Some meeting attendance is required.

Essential Functions

  • Teach the assigned hours of classroom instruction.
  • Develop effective instructional materials.
  • Develop effective evaluation instruments for the assessment of student learning and practical skills.

Job Duties: The Acupuncturist shall:

  • Serves as an Acupuncturist offering a full array of the most current and emerging evidence-based Integrative Medicine approaches for patients with acute and chronic pain who have not responded well to conventional treatment modalities in accordance with the scope of clinical privileges granted by the MTF. The purpose of the work is to restore maximum health, functional independence, and productivity to patients with various acute and chronic pain conditions.
  • Examine all patients prior to initiating a treatment procedure or providing appropriate services. Determines if acupuncture is suitable for the patient by questioning, observing, and examining patients as well as reviewing patient’s drug therapies, health, and medical histories. Obtains patients's; medical histories.
  • Provide appropriate therapeutic procedures and provide a full range of therapy services in support of patient referrals. Acupuncture involves the piercing of the skin by insertion of needles at specific points on or near the surface of the body in order to restore and normalize physiological functions, prevent, or modify the perception of pain.
  • Performs the full scope of acupuncture services for eligible beneficiaries. Duties involve the care and treatment of various illnesses, diseases, and pain management to improve well-being by the application of acupuncture and other Chinese medicine modalities such as electro-acupuncture, acupressure, cupping (stationary, moving and bleeding cupping), moxibustion, and visualization techniques. Acupuncture can be applied to a wide range of health conditions including acute and chronic pain, physical injury, arthritis, headaches, lateral and medial epicondylitis, rotator cuff strains, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as general conditions such as allergies, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory and circulatory disorders, gastro-intestinal problems, neurological, and anxiety disorders.
  • Counsels patients on nutrition, exercise, sleeping habits, stress management, and other matters related to acupuncture care.
  • All patient contact and care shall be safe, timely, result in achievement of realistic and documented treatment goals, and comply with or satisfy the intent of referring medical staff.
  • Plan and prepare written treatment programs based on an evaluation of the patient.
  • Record treatment, response, and progress in patient's AHLTA chart. Patient encounters shall be completed within 3 days (72 hours) of the appointment.
  • Advises patient about recommended courses of treatment and follow-up care. Instruct patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home.
  • Coordinate treatment with physician and other staff members to obtain additional patient information, suggest revisions in treatment program, and integrate acupuncture treatment with other aspects of the patient's health care. Contact referring physicians regarding patient care concerns, as indicated.
  • Provide documented treatment and discharge recommendations to members of the staff in routine, emergency, and special cases as needed.
  • Provide input and attend team meetings, seminars, and quality assurance meetings. Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team to provide assessments, planning, implementation, coordination, evaluation, and monitoring of patients for health options and services.
  • Provide clinical supervision to assistants, technicians, aides, and students.
