Practice Management Field Work Program

Bridging the Gap Between School and Career

When you graduate from AOMA, you will be equipped with deep knowledge of acupuncture and herbs, and extensive clinical training to start your career. It is our goal at AOMA that you will also leave with the practical skills you need to build a career as a Licensed Acupuncturist. The Practice Management Field Work program is a voluntary enrichment opportunity, where students can assist local, successful acupuncture practices with their day-to-day operations, and thereby learn the business side of working in the health care field.

AOMA maintains an updated list of Austin-based acupuncture clinics that offer paid and unpaid opportunities to work in their offices, doing various kinds of administrative work. As a student, you can use these opportunities to learn more about how an acupuncture clinic is set up and maintained. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities as a student, to enrich your own education in practice management. This networking opportunity to work alongside successful practitioners can help bridge the gap between being a student and working in the real world.

Each clinic interviews their own candidates, so please refer to the list below for current opportunities and then apply directly to the clinic or business. If you have any questions or would like to list an opportunity, contact Julia Aziz, the Director of Student and Career Services, at jaziz@aoma.edu.

Testimonials

“My main suggestion on life after acupuncture school is to start it while you are in school….It is essential to get yourself into the professional world outside of school. You need to see the real world dynamics. Not acupuncture school dynamics. How do they schedule? How do they greet and say good bye to clients? Do they sell herbs? Other supplements? How do they market their practice? How do they keep track of everything?”

—Mike Sobin, Class of 2010, excerpted from The Needler, Fall 2013 issue

“Volunteering has been a great way to get on-site reinforcement of the material I'm learning at AOMA, especially in the realm of herbal knowledge.  Plus, above all, it's fun!”

—Andrew Bishop, Current AOMA Student, Fall 2012 cohort
