Dr. Finnell is an Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Practitioner, a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, and a researcher in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). He received his Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and his Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Bastyr University in Kenmore/Seattle, WA, a regionally accredited institution.

The tenet in Chinese medicine of treating the root (cause) of disease instead of the branches (symptoms) is widely held. “This principle is very appealing to me because it is through removing the obstacles to cure that we are able to allow the body to heal. My patients appreciate this perspective as well because it empowers their transformation by making changes in their own lives.”

Dr. John was born with clubbed feet and spent his formative years in and out of surgery, casts and braces.  The day his orthopedist gave up on his feet straightening out, was the day that a spark ignited within him to walk with his feet outwards, until one day he became aware that they were straight. “It is that same spark that I cultivate in my patients that inspires their intention to heal from within and ultimate transformation.”

“My approach is to educate my patients on proper living and prevention, stimulate their body’s natural ability to heal, identify the cause of disease and treat the whole person. I provide supportive care and individualized treatment plans for my patients. In addition to acupuncture and herbal therapies, I also incorporate dietary and lifestyle recommendations into each visit.”

A Texas native, Dr. John took a circuitous route to AOMA. He completed his BA in Chemistry at Austin College in Sherman, TX; he then moved to Sweden, where he completed a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Infrastructure from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and went on to Dallas in his first career as an environmental engineer. Through his experience assessing environmental risks to human health for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, he was inspired to pursue further training in natural medicine and research.

It was his training Naturopathic and Chinese medicines at Bastyr University that laid the foundation for his life’s work. To support his lifelong commitment to improving the health of individuals and communities as a clinician, educator and researcher, he completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology from the University of Washington in Seattle. In addition, he completed both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral clinical research fellowships with the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Now that he is at AOMA, he is using his expertise and years of training to help his patients regain their health and to train the next generation of clinicians and researchers at AOMA.
