JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Meet with patients to obtain information about their complaints, symptoms, medical history, diet, lifestyle, and psychological health.
  • Make diagnoses, according to Chinese Medicine and determine treatment strategies.
  • Explain procedures to patients and prepare them for treatment.
  • Identify precise locations on a patient’s body where needles should be inserted, or where electrical or heat stimulation is to be applied.
  • Perform the following modalities: acupuncture, gua sha, cupping and electrical stimulation of the needles. 
  • Following a procedure, consult with the patient about other therapy, diet, exercise, and emotional health, Suggest possible treatment involving herbal medicine.
  • Evaluate treatment outcomes and maintain patient records.
  • Comply with quality, safety, and infection-prevention protocols, as well as laws and regulations.
  • Work cooperatively with Client Services and other colleagues.
  • Receive continuing education, read trade journals, and keep up-to-date on industry practices and regulations.
  • Clean treatment rooms and equipment used after treatments.
  • Attend and participant in company meetings and training.
  • Report to the Manager.

JOB RELATED SKILLS AND QUALITIES – Great compassion and communication skills, in addition to Chinese Medicine, basic knowledge of yoga, massage and tea, comfortable talking with strangers, and retail sales.

CONDITIONS OF WORK – This position is specifically for working Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Duties include, but are not limited to the design and oversight of acupuncture treatment plans as well as a full range of acupuncture services, monitoring the accuracy of needle placement during a treatment; communicating with patients about any abnormal or unexpected results or responses to treatment and advises patients regarding lifestyle changes; submit referrals and requests for devices, materials and appliances available and patient care including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, response to treatment, plan of care, and patient education as well as identification of documentation of appropriate coding for each patient encounter; provides information regarding the patient consultation to other healthcare providers; manages clinical workload demands; and, serves as a mentor to new staff or students.

  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates will not be appointed under authority of 38 USC chapters 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who are not proficient in written and spoken English.

Grade Determinations:

  • At GS-11, the full performance level, candidates must possess one year of creditable experience that is equivalent to the GS-9 in the Federal service (or equivalent).
  • Experience is only creditable if it is obtained following graduation with a certificate, master's degree or doctoral degree in Acupuncture or Oriental Medicine from an accredited training program. Creditable experience must include work as a professional licensed acupuncturist.

  1. Ability to screen referrals and direct veterans to other services as appropriate. Ability to formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis.
  2. Ability to formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis.
  3. Ability to formulate an acupuncture treatment plan independently or with other health care professionals.
  4. Ability to educate patients on health lifestyle changes including nutrition, exercise, sleeping habits, stress management, mind body techniques and other matters related to acupuncture care. This includes the ability to communicate with individuals of varying backgrounds.
  5. Skill in the selection and use of the appropriate acupuncture tools and supplies based on needs of the patient.

  • Interacts with practice and provider staff in a timely and professional manner.
  • Completes all other necessary duties with attention to detail and in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • Masters Level Certified Diplomate by National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM)
  • Formal training in acupuncture and completion of a professional educational program in a clinical health care specialty
  • 3 years minimum Clinical experience in the practice of acupuncture required

Description

The primary function of the clinician is to provide evidence-based clinical acupuncture services in Cancer Patient Support Center. The incumbent will work collaboratively with our team of physicians, advances practice providers, and other therapists. The position will be responsible for ensuring that all clinic regulations are followed for treatment protocol as well as privacy. They will follow all the guidelines and regulations of Miami Cancer Institute. The acupuncturist will ensure that all billing procedures and appropriate codes are applied for any services offered in the clinic setting.  This position will also be responsible for developing and expanding the acupuncture practice within Miami Cancer Institute.  This will include presentations to colleagues and departments within the Institute as well as to the public.  This position will complete appropriate training as available.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree required. 3 years of clinical acupuncture experience within an oncology setting required, 5 years of clinical setting experience is preferred. Must possess current and unrestricted Florida license as an acupuncturist or equivalent . Completed specialized training for acupuncture and patients with cancer preferred.   8. Consults with and refers patients to appropriate health practitioners when necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Understand the Serasana model of health and wellness, and work together with fellow team members to help our clients take full advantage of available offerings. 
  • Meet with clients to obtain information about their concerns, symptoms, medical history, diet, lifestyle, and overall wellness. 
  • Make diagnoses, according to Chinese Medicine and determine session strategies. 
  • Explain procedures to clients and prepare them for session. 
  • Identify precise locations on client’s body where needles should be inserted, or where electrical or heat stimulation is to be applied. 
  • Competent with the following modalities: acupuncture, gua sha, cupping, moxibustion and electrical stimulation of the needles. 
  • Following each session, consult with the client about other therapies, diet, exercise, and overall wellness. Suggest appropriate inclusion of herbal medicine, and provide client with Wellness Prescription. 
  • Evaluate session outcomes and maintain client records as SOAP Notes. 
  • Comply with quality, safety, and infection-prevention protocols, as well as laws and regulations. 
  • Maintain continuing education requirements, read trade journals, and keep up-to-date on industry practices and regulations.
